Portuguese soccer champions Benfica have become the first club in Portugal to launch their own over-the-top (OTT) subscription platform.

The streaming service, called Benfica Play, will include exclusive interviews with the Primeira Liga club’s current and former players, as well as behind-the-scenes video from matchdays and training sessions.

As part of the move, Benfica have hired a dedicated digital video team to follow the first team and produce exclusive content on a daily basis throughout the year.

Club members will be able to gain access to Benfica Play for €1.99 (US$2.22) per month, while the general public will have to pay €2.99 (US$3.34). The platform will be available via the club’s digital platforms, including their website and iOS and Android apps.

Benfica enlisted the services of Insys Video Technologies, a Switzerland-based OTT solutions company, to lead on the construction and launch of the Benfica Play platform.

The service becomes the latest channel owned by the club, joining their satellite platform, Benfica TV, which was launched in 2008. The club has also confirmed plans to launch their very own digital radio station later in the year.

Attending the service’s launch at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon on 2nd January, club chief executive Domingos Soares de Oliveira said the platform will act as a key pillar within the club’s digital strategy.

“Benfica Play is a digital platform that will give our fans exclusive access to content they have never seen before and will take them closer to the action than they have ever been in the past,” he said.

“We have hundreds of thousands of fans outside of Portugal and this will be a key platform to engage with them and offer them an opportunity to feel closer to their idols.

“We have established a business plan for this project, which is an investment done by Benfica on its own, and the target is to reach several hundreds of thousands of subscribers, which is similar to what we have been able to achieve with our TV channel.”

The launch of Benfica Play comes exactly five months after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) became the first national soccer federation to launch its own TV channel, the Canal 11 network, in August.

The channel, which is produced from the FPF’s studios at the Cidade do Futebol in Lisbon, features more than 600 live matches per season, including national club cup competitions.
