FINDLAY, Ohio — Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has some safety advice for younger drivers this winter: “Tread Wisely” on the roads.
Winter’s wrath brings icy road conditions that can complicate driving, Cooper cautions, especially for young drivers. Cooper’s safety campaign, dubbed Tread Wisely, was developed by the company’s Cooper Tire & Rubber Foundation philanthropic arm and is intended to offer safety tips for teens and young adults.
“Winter weather can require extra attention and quick response when driving, and the cold temperatures can also impact tire care,” Bill Geaman, manager of consumer relations at Cooper, said.
Mr. Geaman notes that outside temperatures can impact tire pressure by 1 psi for every 10 degrees (F) of temperature drop.
“Because even a small drop in tire pressure may alter a vehicle’s safety, it is very important to pay extra attention to your tire pressure during extreme temperatures,” he said.
A vehicle’s ideal tire pressure typically is listed inside the car door, glove box, fuel door or in the car’s manual, Cooper said.
Online videos demonstrating how to check tire pressure and perform other tire safety checks, all via a talking tire named “Cooper,” are available on the Tread Wisely mobile app, which can be downloaded from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
Tread Wisely, geared toward teens and young adults ages 15 to 25 years, educates youth on maintaining proper tread depth, tire condition and tire pressure.
