While the phone was loaded in features in various categories, a powerful set of hardware meant that the phone could actually play some really good looking games. And one game that everyone loved playing was Angry Birds. Today, this game is 10 years old!

Rovio celebrated its 10th anniversary on its Twitter handle.

The game was unveiled on December 11, 2009, and was initially developed by just four developers in Finland. The developers took eight months to bring this fun game to life. The reason that pigs were made the bad guys against the birds was as during that time swine flu was claiming a lot of lives across the globe.

Don’t Miss

  • The game was launched on both Android and iOS, Symbian and Windows Phone operating systems. The original Angry Birds game was the first game in the world that got over a billion downloads. This was also the first smartphone game to be played aboard the International Space Station.

In case you were too young to remember the game’s awesomeness, let us walk you through it. You had a bunch of pigs that stole eggs from a bunch of birds. These birds (unlike real birds) couldn’t fly. So to combat the pigs the birds would use a catapult to go crashing in the pig’s lair, in order to destroy them and retrieve the eggs.

The gameplay was simple and the intuitive sounds from the birds and other elements in the game made the overall experience more entertaining. The game’s success even resulted in sale of Angry Bird-themed merchandise — making the red, blue, yellow and black birds cultural icons. They even had Angry Birds themed parade balloons!

There were a bunch of spin-offs and variations that launched in later years including one with Star Wars movie franchise.
