It’s one of the most popular messaging apps around, but it seems that WhatsApp is crashing on millions of devices due to a new bug.
The issue appears to be in WhatsApp beta version 2.19.364 for Android, and causes the app to crash when users type reply messages.
WABetaInfo first reported the issue in the previous beta version of WhatsApp for Android .
It originally tweeted: “WhatsApp for Android 2.19.363 might crash when tapping reply messages. It’s a common issue, so we should wait the next beta to see if it’s fixed.”
However, while WhatsApp has since released an update, it seems that the problem persists.
Many frustrated users have taken to Twitter to vent their frustrations.
One user said: “It’s not just on tapping the replies. Deleting media, tapping side navigation (for quoted or to bottom of conversation) also freeze the app. It’s basically unusable.”
And another added: “Splash screen crash. Tapping on reply makes the whole phone feel drunk. If I’m chatting with someone and GBoard is on and I go to home, next when I open WhatsApp, the app along with GBoard goes wild! No idea if it’s only me.”
WhatsApp has an official beta testing programme, in which users can test unreleased features before they’re launched for users on the main app.
WhatsApp explained: “As a tester, you’ll receive an update that includes a testing version of the WhatsApp Messenger app, which may also include unreleased versions of its instant app.”
However, it explicitly notes on the Google Play Store that ‘test versions may be unstable.’
